Gathering Waters Festival

On Saturday we went to the Gathering Waters Festival at Lakeshore State Park on the Lake Michigan Coast. There were a variety of activities to do that focused on water safety, water preservation, and protecting the cleanliness and wildlife of Lake Michigan.

Looking at bugs found in Lake Michigan. None of these are harmful bugs, they naturally find their habitats here, however the teacher there described to the kids the harmful things that can happen when waste water or unsafe chemicals are deposited into the lake.

Emma driving the rescue boat.

Operating the hose on the Fire Rescue Boat. As she shifted the gear in front of her, a huge hose attached to the front of the boat changed directions.

The girls in the downstairs of the Fire Boat.

While Alyssa waited in line to kayak (it's funny, she always chooses to do the activities that have the longest wait) the younger girls and I went to do some art projects. It's actually really cool, Kohl's department store has sponsored the Milwaukee Art Museum by giving them a HUGE grant to bring art based activities for children to festivals all over our metro area for the next two years. They had some very cool projects to choose from.

The girls immediately wanted to paint. Rebekah was turning everything brown by layering color on top of color.

Concentrating on her painting. She used oil pastels on card stock to make a design, then painted over in watercolors. It turned out really neat.

Little artists.

Playing in the grass with the city behind them. This new state park that opened in 2007 is beautifully located right on the lakefront with the city just beyond the park.

Ready to kayak!

They made the kayaking look very easy and fun. REI brought all the kayaks and supplies to the festival, and being in their store is actually how I found out it was going on.

Waiting for Daddy and Alyssa to come back to shore.

Learning about the harmful effects of waste water. Emma was shocked to see some of the demonstrations, she couldn't believe some of the bad things that contaminate water.

Rock Climbing was brought to the event by Adventure Rock who donated to our school's auction this spring. The girls had fun scaling the walls.

Being lowered back to the ground.

Ka'iulani's turn.

I think she got a little caught between two different courses up the wall. Sometimes she was using the yellow path, sometimes the green, she still made it almost all the way up, she just made it more difficult.

Dave getting pointers on his golf swing.

Sitting on the rocks by the lakefront with the Dennis Sullivan out in the water behind. It was a beautiful day, it is starting to feel like summer!
