Travel Wisconsin is a website that advertises interesting places and leisure activities that our state has to offer. Right now they have a Winter campaign going on, called Winter Becomes You. In various places around the city there are billboards advertising fun Winter sports. Here is an example of one of the billboards that I see everyday...
I'm not sure if many previous attempts have been made advertise Wisconsin's Winter weather as being an appealing experience, but I do know that they could not have chosen a more aptly titled campaign to describe the kind of Winter we're having this season.
I feel like we have had plenty of opportunity to become one with the cold this year. Every time I step out into a parking lot the cold seems to wrap it's arms around me and it doesn't let go, even after I have returned to my car and turned the heat on full blast. For the most part, the girls have enjoyed it and Rebekah is determined to go ice skating 100 times this year, so we'll see.
All of the photos below were taken in January, but as I sit here typing there is a great flurry of white flying by my window.
No, Emma! Don't eat it!!
Ugh, she ate it. I can't blame her, it's as close as she'll get to a Hawaiian shaved ice around here. But watch out for the yellow snow, Emma!
Nearly knee deep snow for the tiny one.
Snow fort fun.
Ice skating on a day when we were the only ones crazy enough to be out there.
No matter how cold it is, we can't leave Red Arrow without the girls wanting to play on the red arrow.
We went back with some friends the next day when it was only slightly warmer and the place was packed.
Trying ice fishing for the first time.
And a little bit of hockey too, another first.
Don't let that bright sunshine fool you, it was very cold on this afternoon. We were at an urban ecology center event and I overheard a man saying, "The colder it is, the happier I am." Well, he ought to have been good and happy that day because my fingers felt like they were about to freeze off as I took these pictures.
Rosy cheeks tells me it's time for some hot cocoa!
I may complain a little bit about the cold, but I can't imagine living somewhere where we wouldn't have at least a couple of good snows each Winter. It's fun to play in {if only for a short while} and there is nothing more peaceful than looking out to a quiet, white, fresh blanket of snow covering everything outside and knowing we can stay inside to bake cookies and watch movies. I guess it would be the places to go and things that need to be done in the snow that are the most challenging part.
I took some pictures of our snowy backyard that aren't actually that great of photos, but Alyssa was having fun putting sepia and soft focus filters on them. She said she wanted to make her own "snow post." I'll definitely share it if she gets the chance to finish it. Here's to hoping that Spring is hiding just around the corner...

Sometimes I put lots of pictures together and call it a blog post...
February already! How did that happen?
Even if no one else noticed our quiet start to 2014, I know all the grandparents would like see some new pictures up here. I can't exactly count these as "new," but here are a bunch of photos that I have meant to be more timely in posting...
This is Rebekah at the end of her Pee Wee Bible Quiz season. I remember when Alyssa was in Pee Wee and I would chase little toddler Rebekah around at the quiz meets trying to keep her quiet in the hallways while the quizzing was going on. It doesn't even seem possible that Rebekah has now completed three years of her own quizzing! I am so thankful for their teachers and all the time the girls have spent learning the Bible in their years of Bible Quiz, it's a wonderful program!
Super Hero dress up day at gymnastics. Can you guess who her favorite super hero is?
Winter weather in all of it's cold glory has pretty much been the story of our lives here since mid-December. We have not had a shortage of the white stuff this year.
At the annual Trim the Tree party at the Rep.
Family picture night at A Christmas Carol. All the great pictures Dave took this evening really deserve a post of their own. I hope to get to it soon. Alyssa is so completely in her element when she's performing at the Rep, she absolutely loves it.
A few pictures of our house under construction, these were all taken back in early December...
The area that used to be a small kitchenette and bathroom.
The framing for Alyssa's new room.
Future bathroom and the pipes in the floor underneath it.
Now that the upstairs is pretty well put together again, I hardly remember the days when this is what it looked like :-)
Dave working hard. He had just finished putting in a bunch of insulation, that's why he has the mask on. If you've never worked with fiberglass insulation before, it's pretty nasty stuff that you would not want to breathe in.
This is probably one of the last photos taken with that door in place. We closed up the exit since we rarely used it anyway.
About a week after the photos above were taken, and after a lot of hard work hanging drywall by my Uncle Ray and Uncle Ted this is what the same area looked like:
The top left is a sitting room area and there will be a desk that runs along the length of the back wall. The top right and bottom left are views of Alyssa's room, the middle is right at the top of the steps. The bottom right is the area I just mentioned above where there used to be a door. Uncle Ted and Uncle Ray also did an awesome job of painting this whole space seen above. I can't wait to share those photos next!
Christmas craft day, or basteltag, in Rebekah's classroom. She was so proud of this little skier she made. She gave it to Dave for Christmas telling him that it was him on some blue glitter skis.
Emma's classroom Christmas party was the same day and was less about crafts and more about filling the kids with a crazy amount of sweets and singing silly songs in front of the class.
The Kingdom Kid's Choir Christmas Musical, We Three Spies...
Rebekah loved all the songs and dance moves for this musical! She had a little cameo two-line speaking part as "Kid #1." So proud of this once very quiet little munchkin.
Emma played the role of Ms. King. Ms. King was a fun, sassy and excessively fancy character, that honestly was a bit of a stretch for Emma to pull off. To quote Ms. King, "I feel a song coming on..."
I was very happy and excited for her. Emma has tried out for a drama role in Kingdom Kid's Choir for every musical from 1st grade to 5th, and she has often ended up with a singing solo, but she had never been cast in drama before this play. In the end, she put her own little Emma twist on the character and I thought she did it perfectly.
Getting to ride across the stage on a bike that she is much too big for may very well have been her favorite part.
Post show, celebratory photos with friends.
For the first time ever, we didn't put up a Christmas tree this year. There just wasn't any space for one with all the remodeling. I think I took photos of the girls in front of any public Christmas tree we could find to make up for the lack of one in our home.
I hope you had a wonderful Christmas season and a sweet start to 2014! I hope to be back with a January photo re-cap later this week!
In the meantime, please allow Emma to recommend a fun site. Start with episode 1, if you like. Emma showed me this website last night {as things usually go, we may be the very last people to know about it, and it may not be anything new to you}. She had fun following the directions and seeing what would happen next and she thought her cousins might like it too :-)

Finishing Up February
I ran out of days in February for posting all our photos in an organized fashion. Here's a quick summary and a bunch of photos to finish up the month:
Photo 54 of 365, taken February 11th. On this morning, Rebekah had asked me for help with putting on her socks. She's very particular about how her socks feel on her feet and she said, "Ugh, these mystery signs are not fitting on my toes right." I loved her sweet perspective of question marks signaling some mystery to be solved.
Photo 55 of 365, taken February 12th. I'm getting to the point where I am finished enjoying Winter. Packing up hats, gloves, boots and snowpants everyday before school is becoming tiresome. And so are the soggy backpacks that two of the girls bring home almost everyday. I pull out homework, notes and other papers that are completely soaked through because wet snowpants or boots have been sitting in the backpack with them. Yuck! Spring, please arrive soon!!
Photo 56 of 365, taken February 24th. Emma and a few of her teammates after a meet. She scored her highest all around so far as a level 7 at this meet, and she still has some improvements she can make, so it's an exciting time of the gymnastics season.
Snow Day 2013:
While I may complain about Winter, the girls are never disappointed to have an unexpected day off school because of the snow.
Photo 57 of 365, taken February 27th.
Photo 58 of 365, also taken February 27th. What a day!
Photo 59 of 365, taken February 28th. Completing her homework about a snowman. If you look close you can see that she put herself and her sisters on a sled next to the snowman.
Photo 60 of 365, taken February 28th. While we wait for Alyssa to have her singing lesson, Rebekah does her homework. Once she is done with her work, one of our favorite thing to do is to take a walk in the school where the graduating class gets to add their own fishes to the underwater scene that extends the entire hallway {both sides, and it is kind of a tunnel like hallway that leads from the school to the building where the gymnasium is, so you really feel like you're underwater}. They are just beginning to paint this year's additions, and these are our new favorites so far.
Photo 61 of 365, also taken February 28th. My bookends.

Winter Window View
Photo 38 of 365, taken February 9th:
On a snowy afternoon there's nothing better than bundling up and going outside to play...if your a kid, that is! It was a bit too chilly for me to venture out, so all these photos were taken out the living room window. Rebekah and Skyler stayed busy wiping snow off tree branches or any kind of ledge where the snow had piled up, while Emma and Jaydon dug a snow tunnel next to the driveway and threw snow at each other.

Yummy Eats at the Urban Ecology Center

Last weekend I went to a women's conference for church for a few hours on both Friday and Saturday. While I was gone on Saturday, Dave took the girls to the Urban Ecology Center for snacks, sledding and sled dog demonstrations. I mostly got pictures of the food, so it must have been good!
Photo 27 of 365, taken January 26th:

Emma loved seeing the sled dogs when we went to this same event last year and was so happy to re-unite with her favorite dog, Bob again this year. Bob is the darker of the two dogs in this photo and I think Emma wishes she could bring him home.

Snow Wonderful
Photo 26 of 365, taken January 25th:
The girls helped out by shoveling the sidewalk for us last Friday afternoon when they were out of school. I love how Rebekah is dumping a shovel full of snow right in the middle of the sidewalk. Good thing Alyssa was following behind! It was a very light, fluffy snow, perfect for playing in...
And making snow angels, unfortunately there wasn't quite enough of it for any snowmen.
It was still really pretty though, and actually my favorite kind of snow ~ we had the entire driveway and sidewalk cleared in about 15 minutes. Just enough to barely cover the ground.

Happy New Year from the Cool Kite Festival
We spent New Year's afternoon flying kites in frigid temperatures on Milwaukee's lakefront. We pretty much had to carry Rebekah to the car kicking and yelling that she did not want to go...she wanted to stay in her pjs all day, so we let her wear them under her snow suit. Still less than pleased, she put up a fight but had an awesome time once we got there.
I think it was about 27 degrees when we left our house and about 14 degrees by the time we left the kite festival. It was COLD! I love how the colors in the photos came out so blue ~ I didn't edit any of them, they just came out looking this chilly!
At one point, Rebekah felt the wind catch the kite and tug on the string as she flew it. She called out to Dave fearfully asking him to grab a hold of her. She thought the wind had enough pull to whip her off her feet.
All three girls took a few turns flying the kite and Emma and Rebekah made snow angels in the frozen snow.
It was fun to watch the girls run under the kite as Dave flew it. They looked like they were trying to race it and got so excited when the kite soared super high.
Here the girls are trying their hand at creating ice sculptures.
They're fast learners, huh?! {Just kidding, the penguins were made by people who knew what they were doing, not just simply chipping away huge chunk by huge chunk.}
But a really neat thing that happened ~ while they were working, Emma used the sharp end of a pick to carve her name in one of the blocks. At the end of the day Alyssa was collecting some of the scraps that the carvers didn't need anymore. She insisted we could bring them home to keep {and somehow not allow them to melt, after spending a couple hours in the freezing cold we couldn't even have the heat on in the van on our way home in order to preserve them}. Well, when we got home Emma was inspecting the blocks Alyssa chose to bring back, and sure enough one of them was the very block she had carved her name into. Alyssa didn't even know she had grabbed her sister's ice.
Alyssa liked the hot cocoa in the warming house, Emma just liked the icicles.
I decided I am going to try something new in 2013...I want to try to accumulate 365 ordinary photos this year. Photos that simply describe what we were doing on any given day. It might not be the most exciting thing I've ever tried to do {or post about}, but at the end of the year, I hope some fun memories will be there. I haven't thought it through entirely yet, I guess I thought I would let it figure itself out as I go along, as I know better than to set too many rules about what the pictures should be of, how often to take the photos etc. There may be some days where I have several photos from the same day, then possibly go an entire week without taking any. And that's okay.
Without further ado, Photo 1 of 365:
I love how happy Emma looks as she smiles up at the kite! And how Alyssa is flying the kite in the background while Rebekah watches. Taken January 1, 2013.

Winter Fun
We had just enough snow to enjoy a little bit of winter last weekend. I don't love the cold weather, but the girls sure like a good snowfall every now and then, so we were happy to have the chance to head outdoors for some sledding.

Poor Emma kept picking the sunny side of the photos all weekend long...

Definitely one of the best parts of the day was seeing this team of sled dogs. They are really amazing and beautiful animals!!

Emma loved this dog named Bob!

I have always thought that being a sled dog would be really hard work for an animal, and I'm sure to some degree that is accurate. But, I could just see with these dogs how well cared for and loved they were, and when they began the demonstration the dogs were all calling out for a turn to run with the sled. They seemed to love the excitement of it all. And you'll probably think I'm crazy, but one of the dogs could bark "I love you." It sounded a bit Scooby-ish, but it was clear what he was barking.

The girls pretended to ice fish for a little while.

We thought it was neat how this fallen tree trunk was way taller than Rebekah. After stopping for a pic, the girls had a blast sledding down an icy hill. I was surprised because Rebekah really had to be talked into sledding last winter, and she didn't love it then, but she laughed all the way down the hill several times this day. Alyssa flew down the hill at top speed, just loving it, and she's usually my girl who can spend just a short amount time outside in the cold, then she's had enough and would prefer to move on to the hot cocoa part of the fun.
The little bit of snow that fell over the weekend has promptly melted as we had a few days this week that felt a lot more like Spring than the end of January. I'm not complaining, it's been very pleasant, I'm just worried that if winter doesn't actually hit us sometime soon, it will be lingering long into the months that we would love to see warm weather. I'm also worried that our flower bulbs won't have enough freezing cold rest this winter to bloom brightly later this spring.

How Rebekah feels about the melting snow.

My snow loving sweeties. Emma wanted me to add to this post that the girls watched the movie, Mr. Popper's Penguins over the weekend with their friends. All five girls laughed throughout the entire movie, and I've heard the book is even better. Emma is the only one of us who has read it, as her whole second grade class read it together last year. It would definitely be a fun winter read!

What Winter in WI. Should Look Like ~

Snowflake slipping and sliding...

Scarf smiling...

Snow clumped hair in our faces...

Piglet hat wearing, wet mitten and glove adjusting...just some of our favorite things about fun in the snow.
We have not had a lot of snow so far this Winter. There has only been one major snowfall that amounted to 4-5+ inches, much to the dismay of the new snow blower sitting in our garage. The temps have gone up and down so much from there that what we have ended up with is a bunch of patches of slushy ice chunks, instead of actual fluffy snow to play in. You'll notice one of our girls is missing from the pictures and that's because she outgrew her snowpants from last year, and on the day these photos were taken, we had not yet replaced them. Not too many years that you can get away with that until mid-January! She has since picked out a new pair ~ and not worn them outdoors ~ not even once! She has modeled them in the living room a couple of times :-).
We're hoping to change that today. We had a slight dusting of snow last night and we're hoping it's enough for a small little winterfest that is scheduled to go on as planned this afternoon. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...

Winter Poems by Alyssa
After sleeping in last Wednesday morning, I woke up at 6:47 to find Alyssa already awake and busy writing Winter poetry. She said she was inspired by the blizzard. These are all slides of a powerpoint presentation she put together.
She was just trying to rhyme the word house :-)
She has never played hockey before so that part of this poem seemed rather random. When I asked her about it, she told me she was thinking of her friend, Lauren who plays hockey when she wrote it.
This one with the busy background is a little hard to read. It's a tiny bit better if you click on it.
