"The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said." Matthew 28:5-6
The greatest news in the history of the world was given to both Marys on that Sunday morning. Both here in Matthew's account and in Luke 24 it is recorded that the angel had to remind the women that Jesus had told them before his death that all this would happen. I don't know, maybe it's silly of me, but I am not only intrigued by their conversation with the angel, but it also brings me some relief that even they, who were closest to Jesus, didn't entirely understand what was going on. The miracle of what He did and accomplished for them and for us today, held an element of mystery that was too great and wonderful for them to completely understand. Redemption, rescue, grace, mercy and love beyond all comprehension...
We have so much to be thankful for!

Happy Thanksgiving
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Ours was nice. Emma learned how to make origami turkeys at school on the day before Thanksgiving so she stayed busy crafting away so everyone could have one at their place setting. Rebekah made the cute turkey card.
Alyssa and Rebekah were happily playing dress up with items from my mom's closet. Recently Alyssa's favorite thing to wear is my mom's prom dress from when she was in high school. You can't see it all in this picture, but it looks pretty on her.
In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

My Three Cleopatras
Earlier in the month we went to the public museum for their trick or treat night...
Learning sign language during an animal presentation.
In the Streets of Old Milwaukee exhibit there are a lot of old buildings and homes decorated for the time period and culture that they represent. The girls love running through there and playing make believe games as they speak in many foreign accents. Many of the windows have at least somewhat realistic looking figures inside {the woman peeking back out the window at them}...Rebekah only gets so close, I think they scare her a little.
In Japan.
Fancy posing Cleopatras.
This room with all the pretty shells is one of the girls favorite places in the museum. The lighting is kind of strange in there and I haven't figured out what setting to put my camera on to get good photos. I had to add a lot of fill light here, and Rebekah's still wouldn't come out quite right.
Emma in Cleopatra's Dance of the Butterfly.

Happy Halloween

Miscellaneous May Photos
As I went through photos from May, there were several that either didn't fit in with any previous post, or got lost in the shuffle. What follows is patchwork summary of some May events ~
Photo 155 of 365, taken May 8th:
Emma's piano recital, 2013. I miss her piano recital every year because it is always scheduled for a Wednesday night {when I teach at church}, despite asking her teacher to do it on another day. But she did great, I was able to see the video, and I hear her play at home all the time. One of her favorite songs to practice this year was "Money Can't Buy Everything."
Emma and Ava after the recital.
These are a few pics from our yummy Mother's Day brunch at Café Centraal. It was our first time eating there and we loved it! The girls were especially pleased with the homemade donuts, and Alyssa was impressed with the huge variety of teas they have.
Rebekah looks forward to playing on the tot lot outside Alyssa's singing lesson when the weather is nice. It's different than the playground at school and she is getting really confident with the monkey bars.
Photo 156 of 365, taken May 19th:
Dave and I won {or I should say I won, because he couldn't believe I even bid on it} tickets to a Murder Mystery Dinner Event at our school's auction in April. So we went and it was super cheesy, but lots of fun too. Here we are pictured as the class of 1957 Prom King and Queen, suspects in our murder mystery.
Photo 157 of 365, taken May 27th:
Our first parade of the summer season was kind of a bust, it felt more like Halloween than Memorial Day with the occasional cold drizzles and wind.
There were lots of umbrella covered and blanket wrapped gymnasts, but all the kids made the best of it and seemed to have a lot of fun despite being chilly. Emma was only kind of giving me a heart attack as she did aerial cartwheels on a wet slippery road.
Photo 158 of 365, taken May 29th:
At the local district level of the Hershey Track Meet, Emma won the long jump, advancing to the next sectional meet. She took second in the 50m as well. In an effort not to miss church that night, Emma chose to run the 50 as opposed to a longer distance race occurring later in the evening. She enjoyed it!

Celebrate America!
These first few photos are from Memorial Day weekend, but they seemed fitting to celebrate Independence Day as well.
Photo 154 of 365, taken May 26th:
Thank you, veterans and all the servicemen and women who are currently active in all branches of the military! Freedom always comes at a cost and it is humbling to think of what others have sacrificed to make this nation great.
This week we had lots of parades and gymnastics shows to kick off the 4th of July weekend celebrations.
Someone was captivated by her first sparkler ever!
And now for some freedom explosions in the sky ~ I thought some of them looked like flowers and others like planets, but they were all beautiful:
Happy 4th of July!

President's Day
Photo 45 of 365, taken February 18th:
For the second year in a row we made an old fashioned recipe for Cracker Bread on President's Day. We learned about the recipe from Emma's Time for Kids magazine last year and it is said to have been made in George and Martha Washington's kitchen. We were talking to Dave's grandmother on the phone while these were baking and she seemed curious about them, so I thought I would post a picture of the bread as it was coming out of the oven.
It's a super easy recipe: 4 cups of flour, 1/2 cup of butter or margarine, 1 and 1/2 cups of plain yogurt, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Mix all the ingredients and let the dough rest for 5 minutes. After rolling out the dough, use a fork to poke holes in the top and cut it into desired shapes. Bake on a cookie sheet at 325 degrees for 10-12 minutes, then ~ Yum! The little biscuits have been a huge hit with our girls. They eat them with just butter, I like a little strawberry jelly too!

Lincoln's Birthday
Photo 39 of 365 taken February 11th:
In honor of President Linocln's birthday and President's Day coming up, Dave took Alyssa and Rebekah to a library program where they learned about Abraham Lincoln's wife, Mary Todd Lincoln. She never completely recovered from the tragic events of her life, having lost three of her four sons before they reached adulthood and the death of President Lincoln, so it was very sad, but still interesting for them to hear about her life. The storyteller who played Mary Todd Lincoln told a story about her sons Tad and Willie's toy soldier doll, Jack. It is a story the girls know because of this book. Alyssa said she liked hearing her version of the story!
Photo 40 of 365, taken February 12th:
And this might be cheating a little for my 365 photos project because this is not exactly my photo, although I wish were at this school in Hawaii to take it myself! This picture came to us from Dave's dad. Every year, our nieces' elementary school does a special program to honor President Lincoln on his birthday. Our niece is not in this photo, but she got to be one of the speakers for her grade level this year and did a great job! I thought the huge leis layered on Lincoln's statue were beautiful.

Happy New Year from the Cool Kite Festival
We spent New Year's afternoon flying kites in frigid temperatures on Milwaukee's lakefront. We pretty much had to carry Rebekah to the car kicking and yelling that she did not want to go...she wanted to stay in her pjs all day, so we let her wear them under her snow suit. Still less than pleased, she put up a fight but had an awesome time once we got there.
I think it was about 27 degrees when we left our house and about 14 degrees by the time we left the kite festival. It was COLD! I love how the colors in the photos came out so blue ~ I didn't edit any of them, they just came out looking this chilly!
At one point, Rebekah felt the wind catch the kite and tug on the string as she flew it. She called out to Dave fearfully asking him to grab a hold of her. She thought the wind had enough pull to whip her off her feet.
All three girls took a few turns flying the kite and Emma and Rebekah made snow angels in the frozen snow.
It was fun to watch the girls run under the kite as Dave flew it. They looked like they were trying to race it and got so excited when the kite soared super high.
Here the girls are trying their hand at creating ice sculptures.
They're fast learners, huh?! {Just kidding, the penguins were made by people who knew what they were doing, not just simply chipping away huge chunk by huge chunk.}
But a really neat thing that happened ~ while they were working, Emma used the sharp end of a pick to carve her name in one of the blocks. At the end of the day Alyssa was collecting some of the scraps that the carvers didn't need anymore. She insisted we could bring them home to keep {and somehow not allow them to melt, after spending a couple hours in the freezing cold we couldn't even have the heat on in the van on our way home in order to preserve them}. Well, when we got home Emma was inspecting the blocks Alyssa chose to bring back, and sure enough one of them was the very block she had carved her name into. Alyssa didn't even know she had grabbed her sister's ice.
Alyssa liked the hot cocoa in the warming house, Emma just liked the icicles.
I decided I am going to try something new in 2013...I want to try to accumulate 365 ordinary photos this year. Photos that simply describe what we were doing on any given day. It might not be the most exciting thing I've ever tried to do {or post about}, but at the end of the year, I hope some fun memories will be there. I haven't thought it through entirely yet, I guess I thought I would let it figure itself out as I go along, as I know better than to set too many rules about what the pictures should be of, how often to take the photos etc. There may be some days where I have several photos from the same day, then possibly go an entire week without taking any. And that's okay.
Without further ado, Photo 1 of 365:
I love how happy Emma looks as she smiles up at the kite! And how Alyssa is flying the kite in the background while Rebekah watches. Taken January 1, 2013.
