Christmas in August

Kentucky
Our final destination on day one of the trip was Santa Claus, Indiana. The place where it is Christmas 365 days a year.

Outside the Candy Castle, Alyssa now feeling the effects of that frozen hot chocolate {it was very frozen, and very, VERY chocolatey, almost too much so, which sounds crazy coming from a chocolate lover}.

As I mentioned in the previous post, we drove down this way a little more than six years ago. The town of Santa Claus is so cute, and we knew at that time that we would eventually come back once Rebekah was old enough to appreciate and remember it. This ended up being the summer to make the trip, since we also didn't want Alyssa to have entirely "outgrown" the fun of it all.

It makes sense that there are Santas everywhere in Santa Claus. The idea crossed my mind to take photos of all the Santas we saw, then make clever little comments about their expressions, but it must have been a short lived thought because I think I have only three...
IMG_6467
And I'm coming up short on the clever comments...some of their expressions were the expected jolly old st.nick type, others were funny or odd...
IMG_6468
and some were just slightly concerning.

This Santa is a strong fitness proponent for all his adoring fans.

I saw at least one Santa up on a store roof top trying to get in the chimney, a missed photo opportunity is all I can write that up to be. It really did feel at least a bit like Christmas throughout the town ~ even in August. It was kind of fun to have Santa greeting us at the Post Office, in the grocery store and outside Subway.

Again because it's fun to look back at old photos ~ this is how the Post Office Santa looked when we saw him in 2006. He's had a makeover in the last six years, or at least the box he is holding up has. Ho Ho Ho!

George Rogers Clark

In August we took a nine day road trip with my parents. We had lots of fun and saw some really cool places. Our first major stop was George Rogers Clark National Historic Site in Vincennes, Indiana.

The monument is massive and honors General George Rogers Clark who led a near impossible attack against the British fort, Fort Saukville during the Revolutionary War. He was severely under-manned with his volunteer, frontiersmen army and in order to reach the fort, they had to travel for days at a time wading up to their shoulders in the icy Wabash River. The battle sounded treacherous and the eventual British surrender opened the way for expansion into the Northwest Territory. Many years later at the dedication of this memorial, Franklin D. Roosevelt referred to it as "...a campaign that was a brilliant masterpiece of military strategy." The amazing thing ~ General Clark was only 26 years old when he led the forces. IMG_6391
This historic site was the perfect place to get out of the car, stretch a bit, and learn something new ~ fun!!

Here the girls are getting their Junior Ranger badges for completing their workbooks. I explained near the bottom of this post here, why we love the Junior Program so much.
IMG_6431
Another interesting thing we learned here {on our first visit to the site over six years ago} is that George Rogers Clark is one of six brothers, including the explorer William Clark, of Lewis and Clark. All of the brothers had a huge impact as explorers, frontiersmen and military leaders during the time of the Revolutionary War and the years that directly followed. Since learning about his family, I have often thought about the incredible plan that God had for them and all that he accomplished through this one family. And how different the course of American history could have been if this family had never existed, or if their parents hadn't raised their sons in a way that equipped them for this kind of leadership. Amazing!

Just for fun...a collage of photos from our last visit to Vincennes in 2006, about a month before Rebekah was born.

A Bright New Year

The girls were excited to start a new year of school today! As we pulled up to her school, Alyssa practically jumped out of the van while it was still moving and I hardly saw the two younger girls once we got to the elementary school playground.

For the first time this year, I really thought I was okay with school starting, I didn't have that super sad first day feeling until I came home and looked at these pictures that we snapped right before leaving this morning. Where did my tiny girls go? I can practically see them packing up for college and moving into dorm rooms in these photos...

I was happy they were so excited to hit the ground running, and I can't wait to pick them up this afternoon and hear all about their first days!!

Hello and Goodbye

Bright and early on Monday morning I woke to hear Alyssa's excited voice declaring something about a new pet that Daddy brought home. I shook myself awake enough to learn that a turtle had been trying to cross the road right near Dave's gym and after seeing it almost get hit twice he stopped his car and picked it up. He was just going to set it in the safety of the grass on the opposite side of the road, when he thought it looked nice and decided to bring it home for the girls to see. That's my husband ~ the turtle rescuer.
IMG_7502
I had to agree that it was a pretty turtle and the girls quickly took to making a habitat for it in an old sand box. I had my reservations about keeping it because before we got our gecko we were almost set on getting a turtle before our research turned up how messy they can be, and that they can also carry diseases like salmonella. With few exceptions, my belief tends to be that wild animals should stay that way. Upon closer inspection we realized that one of his front claws was damaged ~ enter exception numero uno to my above stated general rule. I felt sorry for the turtle and could just imagine it falling prey to an attack cat or worse.
IMG_7510
This is how the turtle spent much of it's first two days with us...trying to escape the habitat {a seemingly hopeless endeavor with it's injured foot} that the girls had lovingly freshened with clean water, additional rocks and romaine lettuce on an almost hourly basis. It also hissed at Emma or anyone else who tried to pick it up. It slept in a cardboard box in our living room at night because quite often in it's attempt to get out of the sand box, it would flip itself over and not be able to right itself, so the turtle needed near constant supervision. The neighborhood kids were all taking shifts.
IMG_7512
So, the turtle is not making a very convincing argument for us to keep it, and I'm not even sure it wanted to stay with us should we be willing to keep it, when suddenly everything began to change. It started to swim in it's habitat, happy as a little lark. It seemed to be eating some romaine, and it stopped crunching up in it's shell and hissing at the first sight of human hands. On day three of caring for him, we started to read about creating a more permanent habitat for it, and I discovered that this type of turtle {a midland painted box turtle} tends to bond very much with it's caretakers, even responding to their voice. Maybe this wouldn't be such a bad pet after all.
IMG_7514
Whether it had just decided to accept it's new life in a purple plastic turtle sandbox, or whether it actually started to like us, remains unknown. He appeared content for three days, never trying to escape it's new home, when five days after Dave rescued him, he went missing. He was either finally victorious in his jail break, or something worse that I don't even think about. It was completely my fault for trusting that he could make it alone outside for the few hours between the time we left for gymnastics and when Dave would return home later that evening. I had debated leaving him in the cardbox box safe in the living room, but decided that he had seemed so much more content the last few days, that he would probably enjoy the outdoors so much more, and it would be fine outside.

The girls were SAD, I was sad. Alyssa, who wouldn't ever even pick him up became very sentimental and cried that we didn't even get to say goodbye. I felt terrible. There has been a weekend long search party conducted by our girls and most of the kids in the neighborhood. They are still hoping it is somewhere in the neighborhood and that it will return in the next few days, but I think they also knew it preferred to be free.
IMG_6888
So the brief time the turtle stayed with us has not made for the happiest ending to summer vacation, but the girls are fine, busy playing in the backyard with their friends and getting super excited to start school! I'm working on some vacation posts and feeling slightly overwhelmed going through the over 900 photos we took in order to do that. Happy Labor Day Weekend.

Summerfest

Putting together the photos for the GermanFest post last week reminded me that I never shared our Summerfest pictures from earlier in the month of July...

My parents received some free tickets from their neighbors, which they in turn gave to us, so we headed down to a fun day in the sun.

The girls are not ones to pass up a photo opportunity with the Racing Sausages.

My poor girls...they are always asking me if they can dye their hair strange colors...mostly, I think, because there is a coach at the gym who makes it look very cool. Their dark hair just wasn't made to hold the bright colors ~ this spray in temporary color barely showed up within 5 minutes of application, and I know the magenta, blue and purple colors were caked in there because the girls' hairbrush bristles were full of color as they brushed later that night. At least they were able to savor a few minutes of having rock star hair.
IMG_20120708_133511
We also spent time at a stage where the kids could do karaoke. Where they rocked the above mentioned super cool hair!

The Marines were there testing everyone's strength:

I can't remember the last year before this one that we went to Summerfest, we've been before, but not often. Thank you, Mom and Dad for the tickets ~ we had lots of fun!!

Birthday Anticipation for a Little Girl Who Can't Wait to be 6!

IMG_5898
This little one has been waiting to turn 6 since about the day after she turned 5. Earlier in the Spring, when her birthday was still about 94 days away, she started the unofficial countdown to tomorrow ~ the BIG DAY! She would sometimes even ask me more than once in a day how long until her birthday and when I responded with the same number she had gotten earlier that day she would tell me, "Aaawwww, that's what you told me yesterday!?" No, baby, that's what I told you two hours ago...
IMG_6199
She had a tiny, early celebration last week with her friends at church, and then again a day later cupcakes were shared with our friends and neighbors at G & G's house.
IMG_6203
So, no official 6th birthday yet, but still two small parties ~ she is the baby and knows how to work a birthday to her advantage :-)
IMG_6210
We can't wait to celebrate her actual birthday, and after all the time she has spent anticipating it, we hope to make it super special!

Happy Birthday, Sweetheart Kamele!!
We love you more than you could imagine!!

Montreal

Last week, Dave spent the week in Montreal for work. I knew his family would like to see some of the pictures he took. As I looked at them, I was wishing I could travel with him more often when his work takes him to neat places.

This photo and the next several are The Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal. Dave said it was beautiful. The indoor ones are a little grainy, they're just cell phone photos that I had to add a little fill light to...

Dave said the city had a very European feeling, which I don't think he was expecting. He liked it a lot, everything from the cobblestone streets and cool architure, to the shopping he knew his mom would love. We just might have to plan a family vacation :-)

Dave really enjoyed seeing all the Olympic facilities that had been set up when Montreal hosted in 1976.

This photo is for our little world record lover, Alyssa. Daddy was standing in the tallest, leaning man made tower in the world. It was a great place to view all the special buildings put up for Montreal's turn to host the Olympics.

Although this isn't the greatest pic, I knew Dave's mom would like to see some of the shopping that he encountered everywhere. Many of their malls are either built underground or serve as a connection from building to building because of the harsh winters, everywhere he went there were plenty of shopping opportunities. While this looks like a department store, it's the airport. You have to pass through a shopping area {not just the typical souvenirs/postcards/magazine type of shopping, but real shopping, shopping} to get to your gate. Dave was worried his mom would likely miss her flight in this airport :-)
