Wisconsin Dells ~ The Meet

June 23rd was a different kind of meet for Emma.
DSC_0103
It was the first meet that she competed in without any of her teammates alongside her. It was also the first meet that she wore red and black, instead of purple and black. The leo had "Wisconsin" written on the back, and she was proud to represent her club and state in her first ever National Meet.

and did her prettiest poses through all her routines.

And throughout, we watched every moment and were all so proud of her!

When the meet was over, we all wanted to get a picture with the AAU Level 6 National All Around Champion. Good thing she happened to be in our family :-)

One of the vault judges was Dianne Durham, 1983 US National Champion and she was briefly my coach when I was growing up.

Emma also got to meet 2000 Olympian, Morgan White. Who in my opinion is one of the hardest working gymnasts there has ever been, but unfortunately you may not know her name as well as others because she never actually competed in Sydney after she broke her ankle shortly after arriving to the Olympic Games. Morgan was so sweet to Emma, signing her leo and telling her how strong she felt when she gave her hug.

Good Job, Little Emma! You amaze us!!

And thank you so much to her cheering squad! In addition to Dave's parents and my parents, my Aunt Joyce and Uncle Ray also took the trip to see Emma compete, and Emma had a handful of teammates who weren't even competing in her session stay to encourage her on ~ it was so cool for her to have a crowd of support! Thank You!!

Wisconsin Dells ~ Chula Vista and The Ducks

This is what three excited little girls who have been waiting about ten months to see their grandparents looks like:

As Dave's parents traveled, their flight from Chicago to Milwaukee was delayed. Dave even grumbled at one point that he could have driven to Chicago faster to pick them up. Air travel between Chicago and Milwaukee is probably not the way to go, but it was unavoidable on this particular trip from Honolulu and they finally did appear at the end of the terminal :-)

The girls were so happy and it was wonderful to see them! We immediately got on the road to the Dells.

This year the Chula Vista resort in the Dells hosted the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) National Meet. We enjoyed a great weekend there, everything from the comfy rooms and awesome indoor and outdoor waterparks to how the meet was hosted right there on site where we could take a shuttle to and from the competion was perfect.

Super fun slides!

We went on The Wisconsin Ducks which are vehicles that drive on dry land, and float like boats as you approach the water part of the tour. They are sort of one of those cheesy touristy things to do, but we enjoyed it a lot!!

Family photos that include both Dave's parents and my parents are few and far between. We love each one that we have! The cute little blondie in front is sweet Isabel, a family friend who joined us for our Dells weekend. We were so thankful for the time we all had together, even if it was only a brief weekend. It's funny that regardless of where we travel across the U.S. we can often find shops, restaurants etc. that are all pursuing a bit of the Hawaiian Paradise dream. Gotta love it!!

As Sweet As Can Be

I wanted to post a couple of my favorite memories from the school year before I forgot or they got lost in the shuffle of summer photos.

IMG_4764
Rebekah had one of the nicest teachers this year, and she just loved every single thing about Kindergarten! Right after Mother's Day, her teacher planned a Muffins for Moms day, which I had heard about other schools doing something similar, but none of our girls had ever had one before, so it was a new experience for us. It was a super special day.
IMG_4749
Rebekah was so excited about Muffins for Moms, and leading up to the day, talked about it constantly. When all the moms arrived, each of the kids led their moms to their seat and showed them around the room. She was really proud to show me everything, and she seemed so much more independent than she does at home.
IMG_4760
The kids sang a few songs as an entire group, then as smaller groups they each had a special song that they had picked out to perform. Rebekah's special song that she chose was singing the ABCs while they signed the letters. She's signing here with her left hand, showing a little bit of her left dominance. She writes and does most artistic things with her right hand, but tends to eat, cut with scissors, and play sports as a lefty. Just a fun, little known fact about her :-).
IMG_4765
Her improvement with handwriting throughout this school year just amazes me. She was so proud to show me her journal. This page is from their rainforest unit. Using the words that I do know as context clues, I believe her writing here translates to: "The rainforest is near the equator. It is always hot and rains everyday."
IMG_4772
Another thing about Rebekah's teacher that I appreciated so much was how often she integrated art lessons. And not just little projects, but actually teaching the kids about the artists themselves and what influenced their work. At the time of Muffins for Moms, they were learning about Monet, and we got to create our own Monet inspired artwork together.

It was such a sweet afternoon and kind of unique since I had never been offered the opportunity to do this with the older girls. By the time your 3rd in line, it's not too often that you get to experience something for the first time, so it was cool that she had a little something that was all her own.

Alyssa had a great first year in middle school. Going in, we didn't know what to expect from middle school, except that it would be different, and it was! But it was different in a {mostly} good way. She enjoyed the new freedom that came with not having to walk around school as an entire class everytime she left the classroom, and I think she learned a lot of responsibilty that came with that independence.
03March8
In the Spring, Alyssa was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. Here she is at the induction ceremony pictured with two of her BFFs and her principal. She also served as a peer mediator (which I find amusing because everything is so cut and dry with Alyssa. Behavior is either in accordance to the rules or it's not, and she sees very little middle ground so I can only imagine how some of her mediations unfolded. The good, and what I am sure was often rather blunt advice she offered to her peers in conflict, oh to be a fly on the wall in that room.) and she was also given a President's Award for Educational Excellence that is signed by President Obama.

Alyssa once said this funny thing about President Obama; it was a couple of years ago and as we were driving one afternoon, out of nowhere and with a great deal of seriousness she said, "You know, I don't think President Barack Obama even knows I exist." Since not many of us are well acquainted with the President it struck me as cute that she would take offense to his lack of interest in getting to know her. The signature on her certificate was simply an electronic one, which Alyssa herself pointed out to me, but she said it in a way that she envisioned him sitting as his desk pouring over the names on each certificate. Such a sweetheart!

Happy 4th of July and a Start of Summer Recap

Happy 4th of July!! Ours was very warm {fun too}, as was the case for most of the nation, but we are so thankful to celebrate the birthday and freedom of a great country, and one that we are truly blessed to live in!! Many of these pictures below were taken back in early June at one of the events that we always kick off Summer with ~ Reclaiming Our Heritage, Multi-Era Military Re-enactment. Our girls love going to this event so much and it's a wonderful way to learn about American History. It always makes me feel very patriotic to learn about the lives of American soldiers throughout the history of our country. There are so many who have made such a great sacrifice.

Due to funding issues, last year was supposed to be their Grand Finale event, but there were so many people disappointed that it was brought back for at least one more year.
IMG_4885
They had an eat your weight in popcorn contest. Just kidding, but that's a lot of kettle corn and the five of us ate.it.all.
IMG_4917
A serious conversation being had over kettle corn and root beer. I often wonder what they're talking about.
IMG_4908
They had a booth where current military servicemen were applying fake wounds to any child who wanted one. To which Alyssa promptly said "No, thank you." But it was like artwork! This man was so careful with every detail of Emma's injury, and seemed to take a lot of pride in his work.
IMG_4910
Emma loved her wound! She was very proud and kept staring at it like it was a badge of honor or something. In some ways, she is a tiny bit like the little boy her poor Daddy never had.
IMG_4913
A close up of the wound we still have resting on a loose leaf sheet of paper because Emma can't bear to part with the fake shard of glass.
IMG_4904
Rebekah was slightly less impressed with her bruise :)
06June12
We got to do lots of cool things like color patriotic pictures that were sent to soldiers currently deployed, sing patriotic songs, look at the first generation "viewmaster", see newspapers that date back to the American Revolution, and Emma tried to convince me she would wear the raccoon hat to school all Winter if we would buy it for her.
IMG_4899
Alyssa not looking very comfortable on the bed of the injured.
IMG_4887
And apparently we need to have another child so that Abraham Lincoln can have a face in this photo.

The same weekend back in June, and again for the 4th of July, the girls had parades and gymnastics exhibitions.

Aren't these patriotic leos the cutest?

And because my mom has to be one of the coolest Grandmas ever: alyssamomrace
She and Alyssa competed as a relay team in a duathlon. Alyssa ran two miles, my mom biked 10 miles, then Alyssa ran two more miles. Pretty awesome, huh?

Alyssa finishing strong. She's all pumped to compete again next year!

Lately...

We have been busy making summertime memories. The summer has been sweet so far, and already the time is slipping through our fingers too quickly! How can this week be the 4th of July already?!?

Dave's parents were visiting and it was great to spend time with them and have them here at our home {PS...thank you so much for everything, we were so excited you could visit, that we could get a little vacation in, and have both sets of grandparents here for Emma's national meet! It was wonderful!!} I will share more about all those adventures later, but first in honor of our special guests from Hawaii that we had to say good-bye to last Thursday, here is a little song Kamele ran around the house singing in early June and below it a recap of our last few days. The song had a few more verses before she started feeling the pressure of the camera being on her. I love that Ka'iulani is doing a little hula in the background!

06June13
This little one loves her ukulele!  She often carries it around the house singing a chirpy little song, sometimes something we recognize, most of the time just something she's making up as she goes. IMG_20120628_133616
The day Dave's parents left to go back home, I took the girls to the library to pick out their free book for the month of June. We love the summer reading program!

Later that evening, this is what gymnastics practice turned into: IMG_20120628_200904
It was about 100 degrees, possibly even hotter than that in the sweaty gym, so we called it quits about an hour early and all the girls played on the slip and slide. Alyssa and Rebekah had their fair share of leo clad tummy slides too :-)! After a sad morning of saying good-bye to Grandmommy and Granddaddy the girls needed a fun night of being goofy.
06June14
The next day I took the girls to the lakeshore where they played and relaxed... IMG_5497
Perfected their sand castle building skills and... IMG_5480
Emma worked some handstands on her paralettes.

While mini-vacationing in the Dells, we added a new pet to our family. A hermit crab the girls called "Super Crab" because of the super cool Super Man "S" painted on his shell. Rebekah insisted upon the addition of Cotton Candy to his name, so we are proud to introduce the newest member of our family: "Super Cotton Candy Crab."
IMG_5526
We love him already, even though he is not too social, and in his rare moments of crabby friendlyness, he has scared Emma with his "creepy" eyes. Yesterday, while I was busy in the kitchen, I half heard Rebekah asking if she could add seashells to his habitat. I told her okay, not knowing what she was talking about...well, as of this morning he has abandoned his superman shell for a much more narrow shell that I am worried about his ability to crawl out of {I did not even know we had such a shell anywhere in our home, just to show how on top of the adding shells to his habitat conversation I was}. He is fine for now, but if anyone has an idea of how I could get him to go back into his regular home that would be very helpful!
IMG_5583
This past weekend we had a Celebrate Freedom 4th of July musical at our church that Alyssa and Emma performed with the children's choir in. It was followed by an all church picninc with lots of great food. IMG_5587
Our patriotic princesses. Thank you so much Grandmommy and Granddaddy for the pretty dresses, the girls looked so sweet! alyssarebeccajoust
One of the very few photos I took during the picnic after service: Alyssa playing joust with one of her MPact teachers, Miss Rebecca. It was an intense match up, but they looked like they were having so much fun! Looking forward to the 4th of July and hopefully catching up with sharing more of our recent adventures really soon...
