First Tooth Fabulous
Rebekah has been asking since sometime in kindergarten, when her other friends began losing teeth, when she might get a loose tooth of her own. Based upon both of her older sisters losing their first teeth on the late side, I knew she had quite a while to go before she'd be experiencing any of this kind of excitement. Finally, a few weeks ago, she pointed out one of her bottom front teeth telling me it felt weird. I asked her if it was wiggly and we determined that she officially had her first loose tooth. This rather quickly convinced her that she could hardly eat anything at all for risk of the tooth hurting, or heaven forbid, becoming any looser. Over two years of waiting to basically figure out that she'd prefer to keep her deciduous teeth after all.
After about two weeks of apprehensive wiggling and going through a phase where the tooth was so loose she practically spit it out each time she spoke...On November 20th, the tooth came out and...she didn't even know it fell out when it happened. Rebekah was eating a snack as we were driving in the car after school when she called out to me from the back, "Mom, there's something in this puffed rice that is not puffed rice." It didn't immediately occur to me what she was talking about, so I didn't say much. About a minute or so later, I realized what happened and we had to fish through her snack filled cup holder in the car to find where she spit it out. She ran around cheering for about five straight minutes afterwards repeating over and over again, "It came out. My tooth came out. And it did not even hurt me at all. My tooth is really not there anymore. It came out..."
I love little window smiles!
I used a fancy, swirly font to write a letter to Rebekah from the tooth fairy, in part because Emma lost two teeth during this same week and completely lost {as in the tooth never made it from school to home after falling out of her mouth} one of them and I thought it would be fun for the tooth fairy to give her a hard time about the really lost tooth. So anyway, my computer printed letters seemed to go by rather unnoticed by both of the girls and the bottom sentence of her schoolwork here tells exactly what Rebekah thought of it:
"The Letter the Tooth Fairy gave me last week came from the computer."
So while she was thrilled to loose her first tooth, I guess as far as the tooth fairy goes, she is not easily impressed.

Home Sky Feather
Backing up a bit here to June, I wanted to share photos from Rebekah's end of the year first grade field trip to Shalom Wildlife Sanctuary. I never knew there was a place like this so close to where we live. The animals were amazing, it was a really neat day.
The guide gave the kids a short introduction to some of the things we were going to see, then sent them outside for a little playtime.
It was fun to see the imaginative play that went on when the kids were dropped into the forest with just a few basic toys and told to "go play."
Then it was time to see all the animal habitats at the sanctuary.
This baby deer was the most precious thing! It could not have been more than a couple days old, it's legs were all wobbly as it walked around.
Beautiful horses.
This poor guy was rescued by the sanctuary. He was found by some people when he was just a kitten and they decided to make him a pet. They de-clawed him which essentially assured his inability to survive out in his natural habitat. As he got bigger the people realized that he could not be easily domesticated despite their efforts, and they turned him loose. Fortunately he was found and brought to Shalom before any harm could come to him, he will however, never live outside the sanctuary.
Buffalo in their pasture.
This is their oldest and the leader of the buffalo herd. I think our guide called him Bob. Each of the animals had a very large enclosure for their habitat. It is very much like being in the wilderness there, as close to their natural home as possible. You'll notice in many of the photos the animals are approaching the fence and this is because they know when they hear the tour wagon coming through that they are going to be fed.
What does the baby fox say? I learned on this field trip that foxes are known for their loyalty.
Yep, that's Rebekah willingly holding a skunk tail to the back of her head.
At the end of the day, our guide passed around a basket, explaining that each of the kids was going to be given an Indian name at the conclusion of their adventure at Shalom. He asked the kids to feel around in the basket where they would find bags of rocks that each had a name and meaning included within. He said one of the rocks would feel right in their hand and that is the one the kids should take as their new name.
Rebekah chose the name "Home Sky Feather" which is a pigeon. Now I have to admit, I have never thought of birds in a very affectionate way, and my initial response was along the lines of, Pigeon? That's kinda yucky. But then I read the meaning of the name and I warmed up to it...and right away I thought of my mother in law, knowing she would love the meaning behind the name. The meaning on the card said: Pigeon- It knows how to find it's way back home, no matter how far it has gone. They help us to remember and find the love of home that we have moved away from or lost. They are the only bird that can drink by sucking water up into their beaks. This indicates their ability to draw on the love of home no matter how distant. - "Home Sky Feather"

Baby Birds In May
Early in May we saw that birds were creating a nest on top of our side garage lights. With all the choices of the trees in the yard, this seemed like an unlikely place, but the birds seemed happy with their new home.
Photo 140 of 365, taken May 13th:
As the nest grew in size, any slight breeze would blow some of the stray nesting materials, setting off our motion light at all hours of the night. Dave debated taking the nest down, but it was clear that the mama bird was being very protective of it, and we knew baby birds were on their way.
Mama bird sat hunkered down and all puffed up like this for several days in a row.
Photo 141 of 365, taken May 20th:
One day there were some sweet and noisy baby birds out there to greet us. It was neat to see, but it is also when the nest got way out of control. I'm not sure if it was an effort to keep everyone in the nest warm, but over the course of a week or so, the nest tripled in size. It appeared that the adult birds were dragging up every piece of garbage they could find, including paper and something that looked rather cloth-like. Our motion light was set off constantly {we would have just disabled it entirely, but many evenings I really appreciate it as I am walking from the driveway to the house}. After watching the nest grow to monumental size, one morning about half the nest fell on its own...and a second bird family moved in. Now about a month later, we have new baby birds chirping noisily as I type this up. We just might be stuck with that nest all summer.
Photo 142 of 365, taken May 20th:
Unrelated to the birds, Alyssa made a planter using a 2 liter bottle in science class. She says a tomato plant is going to grow.
Photo 143 of 365, also taken May 20th:
Grebes bakery had lots of pretty flag cookies on our last visit. The girls loved them, and continue to look forward to all of Alyssa's monthly orthodontist appointments because they know it means a cookie and donut treat from Grebes.

A Fruity Dessert {for most of us}
Photo 119 of 365, taken May 1st:
I thought I had planned a nice treat for the girls this evening, and for the most part, the girls were excited to make strawberry shortcakes tonight. Alyssa and Rebekah took their time being so careful to place strawberries and blueberries artistically on their whipped cream covered cakes. A third little girl, who shall remain nameless, essentially made a whipped cream boat out of her cake. And typically, she eats strawberries, which is why I left the blueberries, that she absolutely will not touch, separate.
I cannot figure her taste buds out {other than knowing full well that they like sweet}. If only she came with some kind of feeding instructions manual; "She will eat this with this, but not with that..."

Fieldtrips with Friends
I recently went on a fieldtrip with Rebekah's class to the art museum.
The super cool Milwaukee Art Museum.
We had the most amazing German speaking docent for our fieldtrip. That meant it wasn't an overly informative fieldtrip for me, but the kids loved her and it was so neat to hear them interacting in German with her.
Photo 113 of 365, taken April 24th:
We stopped to look at this artwork, by a German artist. This was his very dramatic representation of his village after an explosion. {I think that was what she said anyway, I could not understand much of the explanation}
Rebekah told me this was her favorite piece of art we looked at all day. The old man's eyes kind of scared me a little.
These next photos are a bit out of order. Dave also went on a fieldtrip with Rebekah's class back in March. I just recently saw the photos he took off his phone:
She loved her day at the Milwaukee Public Museum, and loved that Dad was there too!
Thank you, Dave for this wonderful photo of the girls in front of my favorite honey tree :-)
Rebekah and her sweet friend, Ramsey. They have been best buds this year in 1st grade!!

Mount Mary Recycled Sculptures
Photo 111 of 365, taken April 26th:
Mount Mary College has been sending over some art students to work with our students on recycled artwork sculptures. Each classroom has made {or is still working on completing} 3-4 sculptures that will be on display at Kinderfest, an end of the year school festival. It has been a multi-day project for the kids. The stamping that I showed pictures of from Emma's classroom are part of this same project. It has been really neat because the kids have been using several different mediums, from painting to stamping cloth pieces to gluing various materials all in order for these cute characters to come together.
A few of the finished products out in the hallway.
Rebekah's group named their sculpture "King Noah". It is huge for us to have the opportunity to do these kind of art projects because we don't have an art teacher on staff at our school. Often any art that is done is completely because of special projects like this, or creativity the specific classroom teachers decide to incorporate into their lessons. I can't wait to see all of the sculptures "on parade" at the end of the year.

Cookies and a Haircut Idea
Photo 107 of 365, taken April 22nd:
Yesterday, we stopped at the bakery after Alyssa's orthodontist appointment. The two younger girls were so happy to see these Brewer cookies on the shelves...definitely an indication that Summer is on it's way!!
Photo 108 of 365, also taken April 22nd:
The traffic was so terrible on our way back, that I broke down and gave into the requests to stop and get a frosty. At first, Rebekah was so frustrated with Alyssa for trying to put this bib on her, then she realized by tucking her hair into the straps, it was just the right opportunity for her to model the haircut she has been trying to talk me into for months. She keeps asking if I can cut her hair up to her ears. She later saw this photo and told me it was perfect!

Photos 94 and 95
I can't believe we have gotten this close to 100 pictures, I'm still running behind but working on it...
Photo 94 of 365, taken April 5th:
We met my Uncle Ted for breakfast one morning over Spring Break. It was great to see him. The girls love him and call him Uncle Teddy Bear.
Photo 95 of 365, also taken April 5th:
Rebekah and her friend Isabel had fun peeling bark of the tree that holds up the girls' tree house. Rebekah held up this long piece to pretend it was a huge beard.

We Finished It!
Yesterday, before we headed down to my parent's house for the rest of Spring vacation, Rebekah and I finished gluing and framing her classroom project for the German Immersion Foundation auction and dinner that is coming up.
Photo 90 of 365, taken April 3rd:
We ended up having 4 collages like this one. This one is my favorite. The kids worked so hard on them, they are each roughly the size of a poster board. I really wanted to matte each piece, but in the end decided against it because of framing costs. I thought they came out super bright, colorful and happy looking!

An Animated Rebekah
Last night Dave and I took Rebekah to see Wreck-It Ralph.
Photo 88 of 365, taken April 2nd:
It was such a cute movie! Probably my favorite kid's movie in a while.
I was so distracted the entire movie by how much Vanellope von Schweetz looks like Rebekah. Their personalities are even quite similar, a funny mix of strong-willed feistiness that is somewhat timid and very loving. It was like watching a cartoon version of Rebekah on the big screen. Rebekah is certain, however, that she would never wear candy in her hair ~ too sticky!!

Rebekah Goes to the Domes
For the first few days of Spring Break, the two older girls are staying with my parents, so I am having lots of alone time with Rebekah. Yesterday, we went to the domes.
The theme of the show dome right now is Blue Bayou.
Photo 86 of 365, taken April 1st:
The flowers were beautiful, as always.
And my company was pretty sweet too...
I got such a kick out of seeing the things that interested Rebekah the most...above are three things she insisted I take a picture of.
In the arid dome she liked the silly names of some of the cacti. Pictured here are living baseballs, fingers and toes, baby toes and little pickles. She read all these names, giggling the whole time.
Photo 87 of 365, also taken April 1st:
Inspired by all the plants at the domes, we came home to start some cucumber, lettuce and spinach seeds in a window planter. We invited Rebekah's friend, Skylar over to help. The lettuce and spinach seeds were so tiny, the girls could hardly see what they were planting, so I may have some pods with dozens of seeds in them, and some with next to none.
This was the first April Fool's day in a few years that I have not prepared some kind of "trick recipe" for the girls. It didn't seem like quite as much fun without the older two girls here to share it, and Rebekah gladly eats just about any veggie I put in front of her, so I couldn't have pulled any prank on her that would not have been welcomed. Just wait until next year, girls...with a year off I'm sure to come up with something great next April 1st.
